Ayrton Shunt Resistance

Ayrton shunt or universal shunt also considered as indirect measurement method of DC current in which all resistance are connected in series as shown in fig. one advantage of this meter is that it will not damage when a selector switch is changed during operation(a selector switch is a mechanical multi stage switch) that will change the position in multiple steps and from one step to another there is a jump its basically the air gap between each step, in normal condition of multi stage shunts if the position of selector is changed the maximum amount of current will pass through main meter coil which will damage.
